Brief description of the project:
The aim of the project is to contribute to the improvement of health and quality of life of the Slovak population suffering from obesity and its associated health complications and comorbidities by means of progressive research carried out by top scientific researchers from 4 academic and 3 industrial partners.
The main output of the project will be the creation of a functional model of the first Obesity Management Centre in the Slovak Republic, accredited by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), and its subsequent establishment and commissioning in a short timeframe after the end of the project. We expect that the CMO will enable improved supra-institutional management of obese patients through a comprehensive approach by experts based on current medical and scientific knowledge.
The project will also bring new scientific knowledge, practical applications, innovative products and contribute to raising public awareness (especially among young people) of the adverse effects of obesity on health and the progression of comorbidities, the benefits of obesity research, the opportunities for intervention and the importance of prevention and prophylaxis of obesity and its comorbidities.
The implementation of the project will stimulate public-private R&D and innovation cooperation between academic and business entities and improve their competitiveness.

BIOMIN, a.s.
Name of the project:
Research on the extraction of active substances and their appropriate technological processing from egg membrane bio-waste
Project registration number:
2018/ 14569:10 – 26C0
Project implementation period:
12/2018 – 11/2021
Global Objective:
The aim of the project is to investigate the appropriate technological processing and subsequent use of the obtained raw material as a primary API (active product substance) in a new dosage form from the feedstock – biological waste generated in the food industry during the primary processing of eggs. In addition to obtaining and determination of the API itself, another output of the project will be the definition and testing in semi-operational conditions of a new production process and a complex of individual production operations in the processing and stabilization of the input target raw material. It is also necessary that the entire new process line meets the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) criteria in the pharmaceutical industry. The final output of the project will be a new API base substance for use in the pharmaceutical industry, which will have defined and known pharmacological properties. It will be further used as a basis for either a stand-alone – pure product or will serve as an active, enriching component in the production of multifactorial nutritional supplements. The API obtained will maintain the high natural bioavailability of the active components and thus provide the maximum possible benefits of a natural raw material. The final output of the project, namely the new natural API and its production process, will be an excellent, unique, Slovak, highly competitive advantage for further development of the industry segment.
Current status:
In 2020, the project met expectations and progressed according to planned milestones. We managed to build a complete pre-production line for processing primary API and to implement a number of test steps for each of its technological parts. The cumulative knowledge of the high-volume processing of primary API has shown critical points that will need to be fine-tuned before the production start-up date. Overall, however, it can be stated that the line concept in laboratory conditions has been built correctly, and the methods of processing primary API that will be used in the real production phase have been selected. The knowledge gained in this pre-production phase is a significant help in the conception of the final setup of the production line, and we evaluate all the steps of testing as very beneficial and helpful to optimize the planned result. We plan to subject the same critical points along with the need to further test the functionality of the crushing equipment in the next shell collection campaign, when sufficient API supply will be ensured.
We will use the summary of the tests to optimize the individual steps as well as to obtain enough raw material of the primary API to use for the bioassay. The planned goal of achieving an optimal ratio between the medical effect and the technological-energy intensity of the treatment based on the implementation of further pre-production tests seems to be achievable.
At the same time, after signing a contract with a new partner, we will conduct a scientific experiment to verify the effect of the final API already produced in our conditions. Experiment on a biological model – verification of bioavailability and effect on a living chondrocyte cell, and thus to trace the practical biological effect, the direct approximation of which can be expected anabasic effect in the human body when supplemented with a preparation based on the primary API developed by us.
